Brexit is finally here, with the UK leaving the European Union on Friday, January 31. At the end of 2019, Jah Wobble gathered up a Who’s Who of British Post-Punk to record protest song “A Very British Coup,” including his old PiL bandmates Keith Levene and Richard Dudanski (they all played on PiL’s Metal Box), plus The Pop Group’s Mark Stewart, Killing Joke’s Youth, with Screamadelica producer Andrew Weatherall behind the boards. The Video was Directed by another Punk Alumni JC Carroll from The Members “A Very British Coup” was released as a vinyl-only 12″ but now with the day upon us, the single and a few remixes will be released digitally on Friday. On paper, the idea of a post punk supergroup featuring members of my teenage and young adult core inspiration filled me with some trepidation but like the Neu reunion a decade ago, once in a blue moon it works and this, (taking its name from a time when British television was worth watching), is a joy to behold.
And it shows that when Andy Weatherall departed this mortal coil, he was at the top of his game (and way over the legendary 27 years) and light years away from pretty much every artist of the sixties who passed away over the last decade or two always had a plethora of recent albums under their belt full of dross to the point of caricature.
A final point, coming from the North perhaps I have a differing perception of Brexit and for me it feels like both the pro and anti Brexit London-centric factions share the same archetypal vision of a synthetic Britain, be they the pigs or the humans on what was once Maggie’s Farm.
There is another perception of Albion, that both sides have banished down the memory hole – the visionary, revolutionary and dare I say mystical land of the Peasant’s Revolt, The antinomian praxis of the Diggers and Ranters, the visions of Blake and Swedenborg and Jacobian Cabala, the Gordon riots and King Mob, the rise of socialism and radical spiritualism, the general strike of 1926, the squatters movement of post WW2 and dare I say the authentic currents of the counter culture from the 50s to early nineties.
Choosing this vision is the realm of maybe in the land of yes or no – The Jerusalem of, yes, Mark Stewart and the Maffia not the last night of the imperial proms.
