Ask four adolescent assault troopers who seconds before were casually kicking the body of a small dead child to each other as they moved back out of the front line when Smith’s face, from his eyebrows to his upper teeth, mushroomed away from the almost invisible sniper hole in the back of his head leaving his lower jaw as a memorial.
Ask the octogenarian Princess. Immeasurably rich, immeasurably worthless; cocooned in a hive of immeasurably shallow human Pekinese.

The question of God’s interest and participation may be irrelevant.
All the same there is something rich and deeply satisfying about belief in an indifferent, ineffective and incompetent God.
