In Paris in 1968 standing at the barricades we’d listened to Charles de Gaulle with his famous “France aide moi” speech.
Then there was a moment of silence. And then we began to sing the Internationale.
Hearing 1 million people spontaneously bursting into this song was one of the most moving moments of my life.
We sang it in a dozen different languages in a crowd that stretched far out of sight on each side of the front line.
