Poem For Heathcote

On the death of Heathcote Williams. Blue Venus of verse has left us.
Activist, film maker, mischief maker, love warrior, poet, gentle soul,
musical lion, goodbye goodbye goodbye

When your magic sun comets the earth
The flame of rebellion burns
You are the song that rattles the soul
Pompadour haired poet prophet-punk preaching
to the world
You are the final word
Red snapper rebelista!
Lyrical Spartacus – in a maze of
darkness
The sharpened needle of truth
behind the hiss of Judas
flicker kicking with whales
Confabbing with elephants
Mischief making Puck –
inking walls and Buckingham Palace with protest-punch graffiti
Friend to the lost the dispossessed the hungry
Bob Marley tootin’ Emperor of Frestonia
Aristo’ don of Anarchy
Peanut brittle choco chomping British dandy!

Now that you’ve rocketed onto another plane
cherub-smiling dolphins
and tear cupped – daffodils
will sink in slumber
Bonobos and orang-utans will salute your cosmic laughter
Hot-lick word wit playa
Verses clap clap like purple thunder
slapping ignorance –
with spanky pants intelligence
– candy pale eyes
see the air is free
You are the whispered echo of conscience
on a Dizzy Gillespie breeze
Lexical spinning rock god
Skin thumping the drum – spreading your
wizardry on street corners and market stalls
You are that flowering amber butterfly
back flip jibing on talking leaves
The storied power of hope on
a bike of honey bees
The blood dust of a silver-petalled star
Bless up ! Prince Fiah !
A melody of tears may twist the lips of dawn
But your electric harpsichord of love plays on.

    1. Such a beautiful tribute : ” The storied power of hope on a bike of bees..” “Lexical Spinning rock god.” “Pompadour haired poet prophet punk preaching to the world..” Really encapsulates the anarchic spirit of the great Heathcote . Moving beautiful and sparkling .

    2. Quite the moving piece, and truly captures spirit of the delightfully mischievous Heathcote.
      Bon Voyage fine Sir~

    3. Darling Woman,

What a moving, lyrical salute to your dearly departed. I am not familiar with his work, Saira, but I am with yours and I accept his authority on your authority. May he live forever in peace and joy. May things be interesting when he wakes with new and clear eyes, after a little rest, if that be what he wants.

He is lucky to have you still.

      May God rest his soul.

      Love and Solidarity,

      Tino

    4. I really enjoyed this poem. Something in the tone was so much like something I had written though that was on something entirely different

    5. Your love and respect have very poetically postulated the full import of your mentor in general and on you. Great tribute

    6. Saira. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and I am so sure that your mentor would be so pleased that you are using the tricks of the trade he taught you about language in that wonderful tribute…
Your lingual ingenuity is all the reward Heathcote probably needed for his investment in your talent, never mind your outstanding use of it to laud & applaud his gift to you and the world…

    7. Heathcote Williams †

Heathcote lebte selber lange in besetzten Häusern in Notting Hill.

      Für Pieper who pioneered it,
      with love from Heathcote.

Aus seinem Text The Foreskin-Files bastelte ich das Buch Aus den Vorhaut Akten, den Grünen Zweig 128. https://gruenekraft.com/vorhaut-akten-p-44791.html

Zwei Zitate aus den LinerNotes seiner 2014 erschienenen LP ‘American Porn‘ von Jan Herman:
      • Take ‚The United States of Porn‘. The poem runs to 208 lines, nearly all matters of fact. „Amerigo Vespucci, of Florence, a peddler of pornography, / Set his seal on America…“. The name you knew about, but not about the porn. To put a finer point on it, „Thus America and its dream were named after a porn writer / Who worked fo the Medici, the mafia of the Middle Ages.“ Nor may we forget, „As befits a country named after the murderous Medici‘s gofer, / America spends more money on weapons each year / Than the whole world spends on food and drink.“
      • „All his work,“ Harold Pinter, a champion of Heathcote‘s writing, has said, „is deeply political. I think it‘s informed not only by violent contempt for the way people are manipulated, for the status quo, but also – certainly more and more evident in his later work – by compassion for the weak.“ What Pinter once described as Heathcote‘s „nausea at one‘s own romanticism and vulnerability and weakness in allowing ourselfe to be sucked in by film stars, and heroes, and politicians“ is as accurate today as ever.“

      Thanks a lot, mate!

      http://www.sea-urchin.net
