The Billion People March

Billion People

Hey all you wild cats, dreamers and redeemers out there

As COP21 kicked off last Saturday, hundreds of thousands of people around the world took to the streets. Our friends at Brandalism filled Paris with subversive ads calling out the corporate takeover of the conference and 350.org set the tone: keep the fossil fuels in the ground and finance a just transition to 100% renewable energy by 2050!
.
But Paris is in lockdown. Many of the actions we so carefully planned have been derailed. Already the emergency powers are being abused, house arrests and mass suppression of demonstrations are underway.
.
To paraphrase famed Japanese strategist Miyamoto Musashi, to secure victory the most important strategy is to suppress the enemy’s useful actions but allow his useless actions. Now this strategy is being effectively executed against us. They have declared the ground, the terms, and the timeline – what victory can we still achieve under these rules?
.
For many of us, it was never just about protesting during COP21, hoping against hope that the world leaders will finally get it right. We want climate action, yes — but we also want to shake up the whole system from bottom to top.
.
We want to crack criminal corporations, throw sunlight on government secrets, smash the rich-poor gap, make economics tell the ecological truth, change what it feels like to be alive in the twenty-first century. Whatever deal they sign at COP21, we know in our hearts that it won’t be enough.
.
So for now, let the logic of COP21 play itself out and then on Saturday, December 19th, let’s hit the streets of every major city in a global big-bang moment the likes of which the world has never seen. Street protests, lone-wolf actions, hacks, jams, carnivals of delight . . . we can be everywhere and anywhere.
#D19 is the start of a new kind of movement. We’re building a global people’s power bloc. Linked on the Internet, we’ll zero in on the biggest, most world-changing metamemes that have the power to shift the global narrative. Then, next year, we’ll take to the streets again (and again and again) to push our ideas through.
.
The #BillionPeopleMarch could turn out to be the climax of everything we’ve all been fighting for since the original Rio conference 21 years ago. D19 might just be remembered by future generations as the day when the people of the world rose up in massive numbers and started calling the shots from below.

During the COP21 UN Climate Conference in December, the streets of Paris will be locked-down. But eight days after the conference ends we will take to the streets in a global big-bang moment that will, for one beautiful day, make business as usual impossible. In every major city of the world, we will come together in our rage, sorrow, compassion, defiance and determination. A revolutionary carnival against a dysfunctional system that keeps us on the brink of climate catastrophe, financial meltdown and World War 3.
.
But #BILLIONPEOPLEMARCH is more than a moment — it’s a movement. D19 is the first step in building a global peoples’ power bloc. Linked on the Internet, we’ll zero in on half a dozen of the biggest, deepest, most systemic world-changing metamemes that have the power to shift the global narrative towards a sane sustainable future . . . Then in a series of global big-bang moments we’ll push each one of our ideas through.

After centuries of top-down rule by tyrants, kings and now corporations, we the people will take charge of our own destiny and start calling the shots from below.
