The Harlequins of Madrid

harlequins-of-Madrid2b

One by one the harlequins disappear
surrender to ashtray evening; grey on grey,
but there is no grey here, they disappear

down the calles and carrilas, bending the river
the winter leaves fall from the winter trees
the air is still. A bell clangs in the courtyard

a flute plays; rhythms of a sweet empire
years later you will meet yourself here
sit by the palace gates and speak of Anna

never knowing how much pain the stars
have suffered, a piano stands on the street corner
wondering where the music went…
