THE LANDLORD HAS GIVEN UP DRINK

so he can concentrate on selling
more beer, and abusing those
who still imbibe. He cultivates
a network of mistrust and talks
about everyone to everyone else
when they are not in the pub.

There is nowhere else to go,
so we must make do with this.
We forget that quiz night is
each Tuesday and end up with
trivia echoing in our heads.
Sundays is for folk who like

folk music, lunchtime for those
who want to eat. The long sad
is all an act, like angry rants
and politics. It gets harder
every winter when the tourists
go home and it’s only us.
