ZigZag Magazine 50th Anniversary

(Invocations Press, 2014) ISBN 978-0-9568021-7-0. 152pp

Dear Zigzag wanderers

Please raise a glass of hooch or a cup of tea to the old magazine, the first issue of which was published 50 years ago today, on 16 April 1969.

Somehow or other, over the years, Zigzag found its way to everyone it was beamed at. We met so many great people, many of whom (certainly all those to whom this email is directed) became life-long friends. It might sound very hippie-ish but I do feel we were part of a big family – it’s a great pleasure to know you all.

Special thanks, of course, to my Prudential mate John Tobler, who came aboard immediately. Without him, the magazine would have folded within a few months. Special thanks also to all the wonderful musicians who played benefit concerts to keep the magazine going. And special thanks to those who inspired me to start it: Peter Stampfel of the Holy Modal Rounders, Dave Wilson of the Boston Broadside, and poet/teacher Jeff Cloves.

I put together the attached commemorative poster of the first hundred covers with the intention of printing it up and posting it out in stout cardboard tubes – but the cost deterred me. And who needs a poster at our age anyway? If you want one, you can get it printed yourself!

   Love to all

   Peter Frame

    1. Classic! A magazine of its time, used to buy it religiously. Covered what more conservative music mags then didnt. Always stunning front page sleeves.

    5. The best rock magazine ever. Been indebted to it for the past fifty years and still treasure my copies.

    6. What a legacy! Glad to see that you’re still rockin’ Pete. Fond memories of the Soho Sq, days…and the fund-raiser with Mike Nesmith at the Roundhouse.
      Warm regards. Colin (Richardson)
