You ask the old lover,
“Why didn’t you keep a log of heart?”
He says that you have
to learn from your own experience.
You shake your head,
“That is a flawed process.”
You share a bag of peanuts with
the dry man and watch smoke rise
from the burning books in the junkyard.
“There goes the history of love.”
He says, “And of hatred.”
You shake your head, “How can they
coexist? I know that they do, but how?”
The old lover says, “You will have
your version of them and may find
they are two ends of one long thread.”
