ANOTHER MORAL FAILURE

I could have bought a limited edition print
by Howard Hodgkin which was signed and numbered
and anyway, easily identifiable as Howard, for a price
that would have doubled (at least) the moment
he expired (which was imminent) but I didn’t

because Art has an odd meaning to me

I would happily profit from work by someone
I disliked, but I’ve always liked Howard’s use of colour
combined with an abstracted poetic narrative, and
it would have felt (to me) unseemly to have profited
monetarily from such a calculated investment
