PACIFICA

Appliance

Appliance were a British experimental post-rock three piece band, formed in Exeter in 1995. James Brooks (guitar), David Ireland (percussion) and Michael Parker (bass) released three 10-inch vinyl EPs on various independent record labels (which were later reissued along with Peel sessions and rare tracks as Appliance, Reconditioned, a three CD box set) before signing to Mute Records in 1999.

They released four albums and several EPs and singles on Mute, and toured with Add N to X, Goldfrapp, Six by Seven and Wire before stopping in 2003, although Brooks later recorded and played live as Land Observations and Brooks and Parker were ‘rehearsing up new ideas’ in 2025.

Appliance’s music was inspired byKrautrock’s minimalist song structures, mantra-like rhythms, drones and repetition. They made extensive use of home-made guitar effects (appliances) and also played a wide range of instruments in the studio, with more than 50 listed as being used on their Manual album, which ‘Pacifica’ is taken from.
