CLOSE YOUR EYES

we’re sitting on the kitchen floor the
sticky linoleum at 3 AM
& we’re talking & groaning quietly
against waking the others

& I’m reaching back between the car seats
to touch your legs &
we’re running towards each other
across an airport concourse

we’re buying a house & we’re moving in
& we’re eating pasta amongst the boxes
& we’re holding each other to cry
about the donkeys on the beach

we’re in a bar eating
the first food in four days
& we’re sleeping away the afternoon
above a busy city

we’re gleeful over animals
we’re agog over our kittens
we’re building the bed
in our new home

we’re crossing a bridge over a river
& your sunhat has blown off into the water
you’re with me in hospital
we stand together at gravesides

we swim side-by-side through shallow canyons
we point at crabs & fish
we’re painting the house white
& we’re drinking cuba libres

we’re telling each other tales
with the rain against the windows
we’re waking up in the dark hours
& in the dawns

we’re asking each other questions
& we’re giving each other answers
that we may not want to hear
& we’re happy & were happy
all those years ago
