“As Founder/Director of the National Beat Poetry Foundation, Inc., It is my great honour to award Donovan a Lifetime Beat Poet Laureate & Artist Award in 2026. This internationally recognised award is given to Donovan, who is, and has always been, a poet, singer, songwriter and teacher, who treats the song lyric as a vehicle for the same imagistic, spontaneous, jazz-inflected sensibility the Beats brought to the page. He carried that sensibility from the folk clubs of Britain to the world stage, and in doing so did more than almost any musician of his generation to keep the Beat spirit alive in popular culture. For a body of work built on that continuous thread — for the poetry in the songs, and for a lifetime spent honouring the poets who came before him.

As a lifelong advocate of meditation, peace, and love, he joins our organisation and members in continuing to evolve, bringing positive change to the world using our voices and art.”

DONOVAN: THE BEAT BARD OF BOHEMIA

 by Andrew Darlington

“…Tonight, he’ll play here (Leeds) in shimmering spirals of psychedelic lighting, beneath huge monochrome images of three Beat-Generation writers. Jack Kerouac with his deep darkly sensual eyes, a young short-haired Allen Ginsberg wearing a striped tie, and the supernatural stare of William Burroughs. There’ll also be a flickering candle impaled in a drained wine-bottle, wax tendrils curling. A virtual Boho Café…”
