A Palestinian Lullaby

Mother, my dear mother,

can you please mend this toy,
my little bird that no longer sings?

Child, my dear child,
I can’t mend your bird that’s broken,
but sleep; and see what the next day brings.

Mother, dear mother,
can you please rebuild my room,
my room that’s now rubble?

Child, my dear child,
I’m no builder, I can’t restore your room,
but sleep; and see what the next day brings.

Mother, my dear mother,
can you bring back my brother,
my brother who died under the rubble?

Child, my darling child,
O how I wish I could bring back your brother!
Sleep, child, and see what the next day brings…
