Breakfast in the Imagined Gallery

Since the food ran out, we’ve made do with reproductions of famous paintings, with the affluent one per cent commissioning copies of Rockwell’s turkey, Cézanne’s apples, and Manet’s asparagus, to stock their empty larders. The rest of us make do with postcards of Warhol’s soup and those weird assemblages by Arcimboldo, but I need to stress that I’m not complaining. It’s one of the benefits of a broad Arts education and the sustenance it brings, and we share TikTok videos of simple but imaginative ekphrases to feed both brain and belly. Of course, the end is coming, with poisoned soil and the sky smouldering like a neglected oven, but we still lay out places for friends at the feast, still savour the flavours of love over fear.
