Heart of Darkness

A shadow draped in the folds
of gorgeous wilderness.
Forests pleading
in the glow of fires—
broken phrases,
the whispered cry.

Shadow of man, insatiable,
his confidence an ashy halo.
His capacity for fidelity and belief
a conquering darkness.
His vile desires and sorrowful
shaking hands.

Dusk falling.
The room growing darker.
