Interstellar

it’s not as I imagined it
when I look out of the window
I’m less beguiled by the stars
than by the empty space between them
(that I too am suspended in)
& at the back of my mind I know
that although time passes slowly here
I’ll die before the journey’s end

before then I know
there’ll be new constellations
for me to figure out
should I choose to see them
new dots to join
although what they’ll represent
I’ve no idea
there’s no mythology out here

the shape of things recedes
I’m not sure what I am
the music files fail to provide
the consolation I expected &
it’s obvious now how
space & time exceed my reach
it’s not enough to be a metaphor
you need a world for that
