This Mortal Coil
An amazing cover version of Tim Buckley’s wonderful song.
SONG TO THE SIREN
Long afloat on shipless oceans
I did all my best to smile
‘Til your singing eyes and fingers
Drew me loving to your isle
And you sang
Sail to me
Sail to me, let me enfold you
Here I am
Here I am
Waiting to hold you
Did I dream you dreamed about me?
Were you hared when I was fox?
Now my foolish boat is leaning
Broken lovelorn on your rocks
For you sing
Touch me not
Touch me not, come back tomorrow
Oh my heart, oh my heart
Shies from the sorrow
I’m as puzzled as the new born child
I’m as riddled as the tide
Should I stand amid the breakers?
Or should I lie with death, my bride?
Hear me sing
Swim to me
Swim to me, let me enfold you
Here I am
Here I am
Waiting to hold you
.

This is a spine tinglingly exquisite cover of Song To the Siren. Tim Buckley’s version of about 50 years ago was hauntingly beautiful. This version which I think I first heard at the end of the movie Tree of Life by Terence Malick in someways surpasses it. It set me off on a search for other songs as good by Mortal Coil with the wonderful voice of Elizabeth Fraser. None quite compare but the Another Day cover is pretty good. Not as good as Kate Bush. Anyway, this recording is in my top ten of most hauntingly beautiful songs ever – the kind that send tingles up the spine. Thanks for the words to the song!
