I’ve never been one for standing
but I used to imagine sitting in a bar
with a better class of people. More attractive
and erudite. Knowledge about matters
about which I knew nothing. Men who had read
the works of Kant and Hegel (in German)
Conceptualists born in Ghana.
Women, who held forth about determinism
but on the whole, preferred Lacan’s jouissance
which retained an outsider’s edginess. Pan
sexual existentialists. Bra-less wonders.
But it isn’t going happen.
We are going to build a revolution
from supporters of Man United and Liverpool,
disappointed Midlanders. Even Londoners,
who think themselves above us. We’ll drink
until they stop us, get into arguments about
VAR and whether (or not) Everton deserved
a penalty. It was Trotsky who noted
that after a victory, the winners would
get hammered in celebration, allowing
their opponents to regroup and reorganise, arm
themselves with better weapons. What did they
think they were doing? The season wasn’t over.
It was a penalty, even I (a United fan) admit that.
