The Box

there’s a crumpled cardboard box
on the lawn

I guess it came in
on the storm

it tells me it used to be full of beer bottles
about the joy

of maintaining order
of having a purpose in life

the four-square simplicity
of containment

it’s its sole topic of conversation.
talk about living in the past

as for the future
it seems indifferent

happy to sit out there on the lawn
reminiscing

happy to go along with
whatever the weather has in mind
