Lou Terry
Kid’s Cartoon!
If me and my blunt vision tried
And struggled to find
Leverage, so fumbling feelingly
Animal, vegetable, mineral, the spectacle
Always just out of reach
I’d awaken and these
Once seemingly well chosen words
They repeat and unravel
From me uncontrollably heard
I just hope nobody took my joke
Seriously
Other stomachs might feel these highs and lows
Other minds might think up real good reasons
But in these seizures of silence
My tongue may try
Scrape its fork like a stylus
Other hands are ringing
Other plates are spinning
Is it something I could stick on repeat?
Is it someone I know that you’d like me to be?
Is it something you could wear round your neck?
And would you water it if it was growing in your flowerbed?
Can I feel it hear in this room?
Is it a character from a well known kid’s cartoon?
Other stomachs might laugh off these highs and lows
Other minds might think up real good questions
But in these seizures of silence
My tongue will tie
Scrape its fork like a stylus
Other hands are ringing
Other plates are spinning
Other voices singing
Do you even know that I’m here?
Here I am I’m hiding
Do you know I’m hiding here?
Here I am I’m hiding
No one on this train really chose
To be here or where it goes
Invisible hands must work away
Invisible hands work night and day
Ticket inspector walk down the train
‘Tickets and railcards please’
Well I hope that you don’t reach my seat
Before I can get off again.
