Pattern on an Artefact

Like trails of sub-atomic particles
through a cloud-chamber,
the lines which comprise it
(if indeed it is a thing) are tenuous.

What reason do they have to cross
or radiate from the centre
& what are we to make
of the exceptions?

Is it all indeed the product
of a process,
or the depiction of an event, a place,
or an idea? We could find ourselves

on the wrong track entirely (&
the fact we are forced
to ask ourselves these questions
tells us just how little we really know)

& yet the fact remains that our eyes
are drawn to the middle.
We become aware of its density:
is it merely the result of coincidence

or is it the epicentre
of an explosion, or a falling in, or perhaps
the depiction of a passage (where might it lead?);
is it the beginning or the end?

What are we to make of the intensity?
