Bring It On

I’m writing this poem
wearing a pair of socks
from a bargain pack of 12
bought online
sometime in 2022
(ditto underpants)

a pair of trainers
size 9
which I bought 15 years ago
and which
as if by some miracle
still hang together (they’ve
certainly lasted longer
I’m sure
than the capitalist
who owns the means
of their production
intended them to)

a pair of jeans
36L
(just like the last pair
which I wore
until they fell apart

they do the job)

and a t-shirt
bearing a picture of Karl Marx
on the front
which has faded so badly
(what with all the time spent
in the washing machine)
he looks like the spectre
of communism
haunting Europe
all over again
