Daughter Doesn’t Understand War

I cannot make her understand –
even we fight a battle, even we,
right at this moment, stand by
the black, white or by the grey.
My daughter cannot comprehend war.

“No one should .” Says the cat with
some patches of fur missing since
last night’s raid. The locality
has a new Tom. The neighborhood is tense.
Moon knits wrong; a cloud unfurls
the purls of mist.
