The UFOs that kidnap the cattle
return. The farmer tells the tale
to anyone with a little time and
adds that the government should not have
revealed the UFO files. It takes
away the thrill, kills the flame of the myths.
The farmer takes the goat
that became his dog, first as a joke,
and then for real, to the woods.
They patiently wait as the wind
stops breathing; as the owl drops
the rodent from its beaks; silence
awakens the small noises asleep
on the twigs. They wait. The farmer tells
about his father who first witnessed
the phenomenon in his teen.
The farmer tells his goat, “I do not
want to put you down, boy, but you
need to be free.” They wait
for the light, for the beam.
