Each mortal carries an Odysseus inside.
I became one last night, setting off on a
voyage into
the known presented as unknown, like a
glance from a misted casement into
a garden, now changed into a fairy land.
To face the “wine-dark” sea, rolling epic.
Ready
for the new Cyclops, Sirens, Calypsos, tempests,
shipwrecks;
going steadfast, despite being battered on all sides.
You don’t know when you will reach the desired shores. Dim-dreams of
fevered mind. Body tossing on the bunk, calling loud names inscribed in
pining heart, old faces beckon from afar, in fitful delirium. The Return to
Ithaca, last stop on the cracked map.
The beauty and terror of this, every other journey, the quest for a forever
home,
(so, you think, a human pitted against the divine),
an uncertain enterprise blessed by the Olympian gods: jealous, benign, indifferent.
