remnants

nearing February,
most are gone, though some remain,
adorning window panes, trimming trees, dressing front doors,
twinkling stars, fairy lights, faded glitter and figurines –
not meant to withstand the test of time,
remnants of joy, magic and mystery
cherished by those with childlike awe,
the spirit lingers still,
peace on earth and goodwill to all,
let merriment, kinship and light prevail,
lest the cast-out pine wither in vain.
