We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the plans to establish the world’s first octopus farm in Spain. As scientists and concerned citizens, we strongly urge the government of Spain and the European Union to ban octopus farming in Spain.

Octopuses are highly intelligent and sentient beings, capable of complex problem-solving and social interaction. The farming of these intelligent creatures is inherently cruel and inhumane. It is well-documented that octopuses suffer greatly in captivity, and that they experience stress, boredom, and disease.

Furthermore, octopuses are vital components of marine ecosystems, and their removal from the wild for farming purposes could have serious consequences for marine biodiversity. The impact of octopus farming on the marine environment is largely unknown, and could have far-reaching implications for the health of our oceans.

Given these concerns, we call on the governments of Spain, the UK, and the European Union to ban octopus farming, and to take a strong stance against the exploitation of these intelligent creatures. We urge you to prioritise the protection of marine life and the health of our oceans, and to ensure that the welfare of animals is always a top priority.
