war poem

a man I hardly recognize
unlocks the door          goes out
blinks in the sunshine              shades his eyes
looks round                 he has
so much to be thankful for

the birds          for example
he likes to watch the rooks
(he’s watching now)
as they go about their business
in the treetops              making plans
in dark laconic voices

he wonders      what it’s all about
and can they see the war from there
and if they can what do they care
