Verses in the Skin

She wrote her favorite
John Donne verse
along his skin,
a peafowl’s green feather
gliding gently in her hand,
each word a whispered secret,
each line a silent vow.

He, in turn, returned the favor,
his tongue tender as a lover’s caress,
inscribing John Keats upon her skin—
a slow, reverent journey,
each syllable a kiss,
each couplet a breathless oath.

In the hush between their breaths,
poetry bloomed on trembling skin,
where love whispered its deepest truths,
sealed with a touch
that lingered like eternity itself.
