As she walks towards
La Perla, Mar del Plata,
La inquietud del rosal, in one hand,
flowers, in another; an unsung song
on lips, eyes far-off;
another woman steps out
of
sea, at that precise moment,
“teeth of flowers” and “hairnet of dew”
along with some
“weeded moss”
stuck on that figure
in
flowing robes, spectral white,
almost gliding
in
the air.
They meet mid-way.
The latter looks at the book,
gently smiles
at
the younger woman who nods
mechanically,
already
distracted by the allure of the sea,
the gulls circling low
in
a clear cloudless blue sky.
Keep up singing life’s songs!
She seemed to say, wordlessly,
mother-to-daughter,
before
vanishing among the crowds
of
summer tourists flocking to a
monumento to
a poet who, frozen,
watches the sea from the stony
relief.
