The Café Beyond the Last Village

I want to go far from
everyone,
far from everything.
Far, very far,
beyond the last trail,
beyond the last village,
to a little café
veiled somewhere
between the mountains and
the mist.
A café with no name,
with one warm wooden
window
glowing through the thick
fog,
as if the mountain
deities
had kept a butter lamp
burning
for someone
who had been away
too long.
I want to sit there alone
with a cup of hot coffee
while the mountains
play hide and seek with the clouds.
No noise.
No clocks.
No one asking
how I am doing,
where I am going,
or when I will return.
Just the salubrious wind,
the distant mountains,
the fragrance of coffee,
and the quiet sound
of my own breathing –
until the mist
gathers around the café,
until the last light
wanes into the mountains,
and, for a moment,
I feel as though
I have stepped out of the
world
and into a home
where nothing
has ever been lost.
