No horizon will comfort you.
See that faint line I pencilled in,
Around your heart. Stop short.
Lean back on the oars now,
For the current is my favourite.
See this lap. Lay out your dry tresses
To match the bladderack and snap
Of the mussel beds; tiny sleeping captives
In indigo cases.

Romit Berger: “I am a graphic designer. I met my very dear friend, Helen Pletts, in Prague, several years ago. Helen’s inspiration has led my graphic design career into that magical realm which combines illustration and poetry, and our creative wings continue to connect our souls through time and distance.”
In 1999 Romit relocated to Prague with her family where she met Helen and was captivated by the idea of this unique artistic collaboration. Helen remembers that when she first saw Romit’s flat in Prague, it was decorated with gentle ornamentation; a great sense of light, peace and beauty. Romit’s dedication to homing rescue animals, meant that in the middle of this oasis of calm was a dear little street dog, Uzi, with tousled fur. Romit’s breathtaking illustrations and her patience with the elaborate layers of detail have a cinematic quality and have great screen presence online. Romit enjoyed the escape of creating their unusual and often mysterious word and image pieces, all their collaboration was done patiently and quietly, through email, often without deadlines, just for the love of it. Romit feels that meeting Helen became a precious component in her artistic and personal growth, and that their book together ‘your eye protects the soft-toed snowdrop’ is a gift-for-life for them both.
‘your eye protects the soft-toed snowdrop’ (2022, ISBN 978-9-657-68177-0, Gama Poetry) is the title of Helen Pletts’ and Romit Berger’s illustrated compilation of 0ver 10 years of Word & Image collaboration.
*Το βιβλίο έκδοσης του 2022 με τίτλο ‘your eye protects the soft-toed snowdrop’ (2022, ISBN 978-9-657-68177-0, Gama Poetry) είναι η εικονογραφημένη συλλογή της Έλεν Πλετς με τη Ρόμιτ Μπέργκερ απότοκο της δεκαετούς και πλέον συνεργασίας τους με λόγο και χρώμα.

The Procession of the Trojan Horse into Troy, oil painting by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, 1727–1804
‘This painting shows an episode from the mythological Trojan War, as described by the Roman poet Virgil in the Aeneid. The Trojans rejoice as they pull a large wooden horse into their city, believing it to be a gift from the gods; it actually conceals a band of Greek soldiers. In the background, Cassandra, daughter of the King of Troy, is being arrested for having prophesied disaster if the horse entered the city. She turned out to be right: once inside, the Greeks took control of Troy.
The feverish activity of the crowd and the horse’s muscular build and looming stature convey the story’s epic nature. The high walls and the sharply receding space lead our eye towards the city of Troy in the distance, which Tiepolo based on ancient buildings and fortifications in Rome.’
Helen of Troy is largely cited as one of the reasons for the conflict. “When I first read Ma Yongbo’s马永波 ‘The Beauty of Daylight’, I was struck by his creation of Helen of Troy in her own innocence and I found this very refreshing” Helen Pletts 海伦·普莱茨, 14th August 2026, Cambridge, UK, Planet Earth, The Universe
The beauty of Daylight
The beauty of her day is presentable, cinched at the waist
She meets talkative companions at the door, reserved and silent
In the girls’ school, she studies proverbs, contemplates, and walks
Collecting clovers, reciting poems, her laughter
Makes solemn people both sad and foolish
This stern beauty grows day by day
Advancing with the wind, loving things we’ve never seen
Her beauty rejects the world, mocking our passion
Who is she consorting with, immersed in secrecy
In the dim coolness of the inner chamber, how many white dresses does she own?
Those who have touched these lips must not be ordinary mortals
Who can uncover their identity? By dawn
They are dew on the grass, a wisp of dawn on the horizon
Or a wave retreating into the depths of dense fog
How can she, so proud, submit to a mortal body?
This is her, destined to experience fire, miracles, and countless generations
Experiencing countless men, heroes, and demons
Yet pure as if untouched. This is her
Squandering the ocean, the river tinged with ashes in its mouth, cavalry and fleets
Letting us endure hardships on the vast misty sea
When the hometown returning moon raises our bones, she remains youthful
Her slender feet crossing streams and white rocks, seeking hermits
She has forgotten us, forgotten she was an excuse for gods’ mistakes
Her beauty calms the setting sun, makes the river higher than the roof
Time, stars, expeditions, how much blood and land
All become one spring dream of hers.

The beauty of Daylight Όμορφο φως της μέρας

Στη σκοτεινή δροσιά ενός ανήλιαγου δώματος, πόσες λευκές φορεσιές άραγε κατέχει;
Πως μπορεί εκείνη, τόσο περήφανη να υποταχθεί σ’ ένα θνητό σώμα;

“Dear Helen,
That’s true ours is an amazing collaboration. I read again the translations and I cannot believe I did it. Mostly the language via me provided a shelter to both of you.
As if we are orphans and the languages are our fostering mothers. Their holy spirits motherly provide a huge hug to all of their children whether they admit it or not. Like a worldwide root that grows woods of different trees. So I let myself be a part of that experience. I floated towards the directions of a stream of light and affection.
my heartfelt regards

The evening throws us light in a salmon pink
and in the yellow primroses
there is a strange and unknown glow,
that only this falling house knows.
Green is starting to grow on the brown spine
of the spring fishes; swimming
with their quick fins into nothingness.
Even the latch is sleeping,
two keys combining like us;
knowing the sailing waters
and the long avenues of chaos.
And then this. Now the still hour has come for us;
draining the sky of sudden pink
into these once blank and yellow faces

两把钥匙像我们一样结合在一起;
然后便是这般。现在,静息的时刻降临;

we are the night roses rising as bright moths
where dark air is a conjuror of levitation. Black night air
has lifted us and we are floating in darkness.
A black river raising us higher on her jet black waves,
yellow lamp light from the study connecting with each pale paper face.
Blooms that have transformed into rising white, appearing to be gently hovering
in mid flight; a shiver of shell pink sinking into the white
where the lamp is suddenly unquiet

Dream in Early Winter
The broad leaves of the plane tree fall onto the small car,
When all the leaves are gone, the car will turn white,
And from the stars, receive signals from the dead,
Making the dashboard flicker in the dim interior.
For many days, my elder sister and I
Have been building a large stove in the courtyard,
The Spring Festival is near, as if many guests are coming.
For a long time, at last, my mother returns.
Like a Chinese person, I shyly embrace her.
She is still small, her blue coat dusted with snow,
I brush it off with my hat, and as I do, it melts,
Leaving her blue cotton jacket mottled with stains.
She says nothing, her face calm and solemn.
Where has she been? It seems something remains unresolved.
And often, late at night, returning home,
Passing by the small car beneath the plane trees,
I can still feel the metal’s lingering warmth,
Like the body of a lover, just calmed down.

A Dream in Early Winter

A Dream in Early Winter

The beheaded okras, their dew-shiny heads
are crowded in the basket; countless black pupils staring.
They were John the Baptist preaching in the autumn wind,
carrying the bright rumour from the roof to the plain.
At this moment, Salome has stopped dancing,
standing quietly by the sorghum field as a village girl,
between the road and the field, her face
is almost expressionless, as if she had stood there
for centuries, as if history was just
a vague gossamer floating in front of her eyes.
The horse drawn cart hasn’t gone far, it will carry away
the love of the land, and one or two shy grasshoppers.
At this moment, her hanging sickle
reflects the white light of winter arising in the distance.

The on-line publishing world that is INK SWEAT & TEARS (IS&T) — the home of Word & Image
https://inksweatandtears.co.uk/

Kate Birch took over as publisher and manager of Ink Sweat & Tears in 2011. Prior to that, she and her husband, Dominic Christian, set up the Café Writers Pamphlet Commission Competition in 2007. She sat on all subsequent judging panels and managed the competition’s transition from Café Writers to IS&T in 2014. She has established several scholarships at the University of East Anglia (UEA) which go towards an MA in Creative Writing Poetry and was part of the Advisory Group for UEA’s Mellon Poetry Archive. Kate has been involved in several projects with the London Writers Centre (formerly Spread the Word) and supports the Jhalak Poetry Prize.

Helen Ivory is a poet and visual artist who makes shadowboxes, collage and needlefelt creatures. She has been awarded a Gregory Award and a Cholmondeley Award from the Society of Authors. She edits IS&T, teaches and mentors for Arvon, The Poetry School and NCW Academy. Her sixth Bloodaxe collection Constructing a Witch (2024) was a PBS Winter Recommendation and has been translated into Greek and published by Thraka. A poem from her surrealist chapbook Maps of the Abandoned City (SurVision 2019) is one of the Poems on the Underground. Her Wunderkammer: New and Selected Poems appeared from MadHat in the US in 2023. She has just been awarded an Author’s Foundation Grant to work on her new collection for Bloodaxe.
Ma Yongbo 马永波 and Helen Pletts 海伦·普莱茨 ask Kate Birch and Helen Ivory about their creative approach to on-line poetry publishing :
Ink Sweat & Tears (IS&T) has been actively publishing poetry for roughly 20 years now, still holding its own in the digital age of reading, as envisioned by the poetry website founder Charles Christian.
Please can you tell us a bit about this amazing website’s history?
Charles Christian was ahead of his time. In 2007, he looked at how the internet was evolving and created IS&T as a platform for new poetry, short prose and experimental work in digital media. Helen came on as Deputy Editor in 2010 and when Charles turned his attention to other ventures the following year, Kate joined as publisher, manager and, as Helen originally called her, Ministering Angel.
As the driving force behind the website, what does it feel like to run Ink Sweat & Tears? And what do you feel keeps this website the contemporary poetry showcase it is?
We keep mixing it up, trying new things. We started to print publish on a very limited basis in 2013 with our pamphlet anthology TWELVE: Slanted Poems for Christmas and subsequently took over Café Writers Pamphlet Commission Competition the next year. This brought us to the attention of up-and-coming poets such as Jay Bernard and Gail McConnell. Jay was a joint winner of the Commission in 2014 and their book The Red and Yellow Nothing was shortlisted for the Ted Hughes Award, while Gail’s Fothermather (a 2017 joint winner) was a Michael Marks Award shortlistee.
In 2021 and 2023, we published anthologies in collaboration with Spread the Word (now the London Writers Centre). Our first was Runaways London developed in conjunction with the University of Glasgow’s Runaway Slaves in Britian project. This was followed by Uprising & Resistance. The latter was sponsored by the Mellon Foundation and a collaboration with Black Beyond Data and Johns Hopkins University in the US.
To keep the website contemporary, we have revamped it twice. Following the latest in 2021, we started accepting Filmpoems and then set up our editing internship programme for global majority poets in the UK, to address the imbalance in publishing. A number of these former interns have gone on to work for publishers such as Penguin, Random House and the Little, Brown Book Group (Hachette). Several have been shortlisted for major poetry awards (though we cannot pretend to take too much credit for that).
For the last two years, Ink Sweat & Tears has been a supporter of the Jhalak Awards’ Poetry Prize and IS&T interns have been able to sit in on the judging process. We also sponsor the Black British Book Festival in a small way.
But with all these new ventures, what keeps us as a ‘contemporary poetry showcase’ is the support of those writers and artists who continue to submit to us, from those who try out a poem or two with us and go on to have significant careers to our regular contributors, many of whom have published collections a number of times over. A case in point is Rachael Clyne. Her poem ‘Homeland’, a Pick of the Month for June 2025 has just been Highly Commended in the Forward Prizes Best Single Poem (Written) Award and is in The Forward Book of Poetry 2027.
Kate and Helen, can you tell us how Word & Image came about as a publishing idea and how poets have responded over the years since these submissions have been encouraged?
If you go back into our archives, we have Word & Image as a category from July 2007, although it was not always strictly that. You will find entries for animations from Billy Collins and concrete poetry from Landon Morgan and Chris Major. Sadly, the web site revamps meant that we could not keep everything, and the contents of these entries (and probably entire posts) have been lost in time.
However, with Helen coming on board as a visual artist as well as a poet, it was not long before IS&T started publishing work by American artist C. Albert – who was for a time our official resident artist – and in 2011 our Word & Image offering became a key part of IS&T.
Later that year, we published our first Word & Image from Helen Pletts and Romit Berger. We had published both before, including a number of podcasts from Helen Pletts, again very much ahead of their time and sadly lost after the site was updated. As C. Albert began to focus on other areas, Helen and Romit effectively became our new W&I poet/artist in residence, a collaboration that culminated in the publication of their book your eye protects the soft-toed snowdrop (2022), for which Helen Ivory wrote the foreword and Kate the back cover note. That collaboration had gone full circle. The collection’s title was the title of the piece that opened the book, Pletts and Berger’s first work together and the first that IS&T published.
In recent years, we have been privileged to repost some of these Pletts/Berger Word & Image pieces with translations from Ma Yongbo. These translations have been extremely well received, to the extent that we now have a separate ‘Translation’ category on the site.
We continue to publish an eclectic variety of Word & Image from artists/writers such as Nina Nazir, Oormila Vijayakrishnan Prahlad and Debbie Strange.
