An Essay In How Religion Divides Us

buying a Judge Dredd comic for
99p in the Oxfam charity shop,
the young Asian at the till
wears a ‘True Religion’ T-shirt,
is it a band? a clothing brand?
or a declaration of faith?
I’m about to say ‘my friend,
there is no true religion,
they’re all just fairytales
to confuse and divide us,’
but I lose my nerve,
as I leave, we remain
confused and divided
