Canyon/Lou Terry

Sensational!” – John Cooper Clarke

Lou Terry’s new single Canyon is released on The state51 conspiracy record label. A Deptford based songwriter, he once won the heart of John Cooper Clarke who stumbled upon him performing in a pub and was so entranced he missed his train home. Last year Terry played shows with Black Country, New Road and Piglet. This is Lou Terry’s first new music of 2024. He has previously earned support from the likes of Dazed, Loud & Quiet and The Line Of Best Fit

“Canyon is a song that’s like a kick out of bed, or against burying your head in the sand, politically.  It’s for anyone who’s holding themselves together or is falling apart right now – I think the world is quite difficult to wake up for at the moment, and (for me at least) this easily leads into an often immobilizing depression, I kind of just want to climb into a bunker and forget about it all, and it can lead to feelings of shame about feeling inactive or ineffectual at making a difference (like ‘throwing feathers into a Canyon’), but at the same time, you somehow need to wake up more than ever, and find the strength to put your voice and your body in the path of the destruction that’s relentlessly pedalled by our government, the police and institutions that maintain and allow this to be our status quo. “

“The song started with a 2 chord riff, my favourite songs usually are, it’s all you need, one thing and then another, that’s the essence of music.  I added beat made on my vocal beats.  I went to my guitarist Armando’s flat, who at the time lived on my road, and we added a lot of synth melodies in counterpoint – Armando did a great job at making this work in a pop song, and also added textures to mimic the falling feathers in the lyrics.  Emmett wrote a great bass part with a really weird diminished harmony, kinda sounds like pink panther haha.  And I always love live drums with electronic ones, there’s a great counter-rhythm on the ride cymbals in the climax from Luke.  I then took what we had and made a load more drum sounds and bleeps with a modular synth and edited them together to make the beat match the course of the song.  Me and Armando did the final mix and I’m pretty happy with it, it’s a fun song.  The video from Toby and Ethan (Reality Breakdown) captures this I think also, we had a real laugh making it with them shaking me about in a cardboard box.  “
