    1. It’s good to return to John Cage. His music crosses all the artificial boundaries that society places in the way of artistic expression and collaboration.

    2. “Sing That”
for John Cage and Joan Retallack

      There
      of change visible
      of speeding it up, yes,
      But you’re not
      you mean,
      Yes. But.
      Would be in that spirit

      than depending on
      doing, hmmm?

      Yes happening.

      looks like the
world is not so much images, as
      Ships
      together at some moment,
      an essay by
      A Chinese Child’s
      Sense of the
      Perhaps

Of speeding it up. Yes, I like that.

Are you going to get the phone?
      (resigned laugh)

      New
      (pause)
      meaning
      O.K.
      (Long Laughter)

No, we don’t have to forget entirely.

      performance
      points.
      We don’t know
      degrees.
      dimensionally.
      you’re
      you
      again, through chance operations
      you’re basically shifting
      the
      answers, or
      I
      would change something
      for self-alteration.

gets up to check what’s cooking.
      That’s my general practice.

      Yes,
      he does.
      mind makes.

      (in a very faint voice)
      that again.

      had freight cars
      the freight cars coal, for
      each freight car.
      So each freight car
      Well, whatever

      So
      say, nothing; or
      gamut

      is, play
      the tone
      Lullaby.

      already
      was
      pianist

      the pianist’s
      chance–

      enclosed a
      violin–
      a very high note.

      what
      of them
      some
      From

      imperceptible
      the E
      sense

      Why up?
      I don’t know

      –Impossible can be done…yes…

      (pointing to manuscript page)

      Stone, hmmm?
      I
      And
      The Surface.

      Everything
      All
      Empty
      On the edge of–
      Emptiness–
      Emptiness.

Yes. And will defy, or bring together, opposites.
      (Pause.)
Pushing against that edge then always

      Reading Marks.

      (smiles) Mmm.

      A virtue?
      A virtuoso!

      Are you coming back?
      (a bit reluctantly) Yes.

      Like our zip codes.

      (Long laughter.)

      repeating.
      I couldn’t do that.

      You
      new ways
      Are
      Yes.
      Yes, isn’t that beautiful

      And
      by using
      I started doing.

      sing that.
