SOUNDSTORM

Fingal’s Cave – Staffa – August 8th 1829

A dark slab

on the edge of the sea

a giant asleep

on the sky’s horizon

and once inside
so black as being
in the heart of
night’s own
chamber

as breaking surf
rises over
columns of sound
that echo long past
any form of shelter

hammer the bows
of a stormboat
quickening the theme
of a symphony
in notes
of insistent
purposeless rain
