The Empire of Light

In the room
in which I’m standing
the light
is artificial
but the room—
the room is real.

On the wall
hangs a cheap reproduction
of an actual painting
by René Magritte
known as
The Treachery of Images.

When I
switch off the light
the darkness is genuine,
while in my mind
lingers the image
of a real painting.
