in the eye of the beholder


and so
they set about
constructing
their concrete plans of utopian intent:
functional forms with formidable foundations,
fit for purpose
and fit for the masses.
futuristic folly.
dystopian disaster.
such marvellous monstrosities
– these burgeoning beasts.

tormenting skylines
and sensibilities alike.
raw and exposed
of bricks, of blocks, of steel and slab
stark simplicity,
stripped back – stripped bare,
deliciously drab,
deliciously dreary,
dank and dehumanising
–    these machines for living.

its order they command
these monolithic marvels,
structure, strength, stability, sameness.
boldly balanced,
warts and all.
unpretentious and unapologetic
 these repugnant relics.

yet, in the eye of the beholder
these silent sentinels persist,
adorning urban landscapes,
brazenly beckoning,
 brutally beautiful.
