and so
they set about
constructing
their concrete plans of utopian intent:
functional forms with formidable foundations,
fit for purpose
and fit for the masses.
futuristic folly.
dystopian disaster.
such marvellous monstrosities
– these burgeoning beasts.
tormenting skylines
and sensibilities alike.
raw and exposed
of bricks, of blocks, of steel and slab
stark simplicity,
stripped back – stripped bare,
deliciously drab,
deliciously dreary,
dank and dehumanising
– these ‘machines for living’.
it’s order they command
these monolithic marvels,
structure, strength, stability, sameness.
boldly balanced,
warts and all.
unpretentious and unapologetic
– these repugnant relics.
yet, in the eye of the beholder
these silent sentinels persist,
adorning urban landscapes,
brazenly beckoning,
brutally beautiful.
