Nobody’s Business

Friday afternoons I worked in an anarchist bookshop called
Nobody’s Business.
It attracted –
political activists,
people with mental health problems
and curious, liberal-minded people.
Facilities included –
comfy seats,
a free cup of tea
and a toilet with a sign that said,
‘Keep the toilet clean,
the revolution starts here.’

One afternoon I had to leave early,
I handed the shop over to the customers and explained –
If anybody wants to buy anything,
put the money in the wooden box,
write the item in the book,
the next worker will arrive in an hour.

Later I joked that things would be stolen,
but anything bought was recorded in the book
and the money box was correct to the penny.
One thing went missing –
the sign in the toilet that said,
‘Keep the toilet clean,
the revolution starts here.’
