Everyone Screamed

after Siegfried Sassoon

Everyone suddenly started screaming;
& I was filled with such terror
As birds in a battery farm must suffer,
Winging wildly inside their crates,
Shut in a shed, watching the machinery dispatch their mates.

Everyone’s voice got louder and louder;
Until Death came like the setting sun:
My heart was shaken with tears at a horror
I’ll never forget … O, but Everyone
Was a bird, & there was no escape, & nothing could be done.
