Douce Tristesse (A Love Song)

the honey mesquite smells sweet,

 but sweeter still the golden aster plucked from the mountain trail

the dwarf rabbit brush whispers in the gale,

  camping under the stars

    till Cassiopeia retreats at dawn

a riderless mule steers itself over the horizon

  as the sun sets on the sage;

    the crawfish feast on suicide

the featherless soul of John James Audubon

  has taken flight and gone

    his aquatints mint gold in chiaroscuro song

life is as deep as the well is long;

  my baby said she’s never coming home to stay —

    all her clothes are done in pawn;

      it’s always gonna be that rainy day

the future’s bleached the oaks of Arkansas;

  it’s forever twilight in the gloaming of Wyoming —

    sugaree, sugaree, what’s it all been for

if you see a blue moon standing alone and apart,

  beyond the sunset, beyond the sea,

    forget the dreams in your heart:

      go keep it company
