ELITE POEM

I have been longing for an invitation
to read my poetry before the elite
of our city’s literary community although
I am well aware that while some of them
know me none of them think of me
as their friend but rather as an upstart
and it does not seem to register with
them that my poems have been published
in places they would give their eye-teeth
to be seen in but really I do not really care
because if I were to read for them I would
also have to talk to them and I’d hate that.
