Whilst we struggle with the dramatic changes to our daily lives and the devastating impact of the coronavirus, some are desperately yearning to get ‘back to normal’. But unfortunately, when it comes to factory farming, ‘normal’ could trigger the next global pandemic.

Bringing an end to intensive farming has long been our fight together. Now, with the stakes higher than ever, global and urgent change – revolution – is in our sights.

Please, take action todayurge influential organisations like the United Nations, the World Bank and the World Health Organisation to replace factory farming with a food system that respects animals, nurtures our planet, and reduces the risk of pandemics.

WHY IS FACTORY FARMING A PANDEMIC RISK?

Intensive farms are breeding grounds for bacteria, viruses and diseases that threaten human health. Animals are often stressed, crowded, bred for unnaturally fast growth or high yields, and forced to live in their own faeces. Their immune systems are commonly weak, and they are fed antibiotics to stop them becoming sick and dying.

These harmful farming practices increase the chances that another disease will spread in animals, mutate and become deadly to humans. It’s time to fix this broken system – and you can be part of the change.

Together, we can bring about a revolution to protect animal welfare, human health and the environment.

Is the next pandemic on our plate report cover

Our new report ‘Is the next pandemic on our plate?’ details how the next pandemic could originate from a factory farm.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), three in four new or emerging infectious diseases in people come from animals. Examples include bacteria such as Escherichia Coli (E. Coli), Campylobacter and Salmonella, and viruses including Avian and Swine Influenza.

Globally, up to 70% of antibiotics are administered to farmed animals – a perfect storm for triggering the spread of drug-resistant bacteria.

Industrial livestock production is a major cause of air pollution. According to latest reports, this can result in serious respiratory disease that leaves people less able to survive COVID-19.

As a Compassion supporter, you know that factory farming isn’t just a major pandemic risk. You understand it’s also the leading cause of global animal suffering and a major contributor to the climate crisis.

What’s more, our over-reliance on low quality, factory farmed animal products decimates critical wildlife habitat, ravages vulnerable communities with air and water pollution and drives mass deforestation.

It’s no exaggeration to say that, to save countless lives, we must end factory farming. Please, call on the world’s leading institutions to shape a new food system that protects animals, people and the planet.

I’m sending my very best wishes to you and your loved ones. We are in this together and, in years to come, we’ll remember how we worked together with kindness, as a global community, to create a better world.

Now, let’s begin.

Thank you for helping to build a future free from factory farming.

With best wishes,

Phil Lymbery

PS: Though our work ahead will not be easy, together, we must speak out. It’s time for change. Thank you.
