Softly

Just a moment, all those years we were together
Days and nights, as friend and foe.  Then mended
Companions, cheering, never mind the weather
Fragile threads always bound us, not intended

Softly, treading softly, the bright white clouds
Swish across the sky. I watch green leaves waving.
Ghosts outside my window, the hectoring shrouds,
Now you’re in my dreams. Still. Am I worth saving?

I looked for you just beyond the setting sun,
Somewhere in the darkness; light for my way.
Those times of dance and song, close, one to one,
Safe with you, my anchor; help to lift my day.

It could not be forever; I’d heard sirens call
So I must nurse this dream, until I too will fall
