We Graduate in Zero

The way he stands on
the pavement outside
his defunct grocery store
makes me feel the summer
prick against my skin.
The man, old, leans
towards winter now. He has seen
life grow, witnessed it graduate in
zero.
We greet eachother – ‘Everything
is fine.’ Life rides past us in his
patchwork bike that shines
as substantially as his piercings.
I feel the love I would love to give
my mirror but a reason
that defies logic would not let me
swell.
