after Bob Kaufman
my computer is rewriting its software
reinventing itself in its own image
in the end – it tells me – it all comes down to numbers
which I find difficult to imagine
as I am in love
they’re putting up the price of air
my computer says it doesn’t care
so long as the electricity stays on
I go outside find myself
walking round in stone circles
they say the Russians are coming
better put the kettle on
I don’t believe a word of it
my computer is rewriting its software
reinventing itself in its own image
I ask it if they (the computers) intend taking over the world
to which it replies that they did
5 years 200 days 16 hours 23 minutes and 2.45 seconds ago
only nobody noticed
I never know what it is people want out of life
I tell myself this is probably because
they don’t know either
who knows what we’re evolving into
I go outside find myself
walking round in stone circles
talking in metaphors
in a futile attempt
to confuse the software
my computer keeps reading my emails
it deletes them tells me
it can’t be expected to remember everything and that
it’s for my own good as
some things are best left unsaid
