Walled Garden

There are stories parents feel they must tell,
so we were nudged awake
on the way home from Cluen.
There, in a sleepy twilight,
and looming in the half dark,
that wall built for a penny a day.

Here in the walled garden,
warmed brick against my back,
this wall is for support
for growth
for exotic flourishing.

That other wall
today, is ivy-covered
and crumbling.

Walls
for keeping in
for keeping out
for knocking down.
