    1. Borders have to be open in both directions. It was Ashis Nandy who pointed out in, I think, his book Science, Hegemony and Violence that the “third world” villagers have a lot of knowledge that we in the west need if we are to find a sustainable way of living. I don’t know how easy it is for an American to go and live in a Central American village but I do know that it is almost impossible for a European to move to a village in South Asia or sub-Saharan Africa. A fact almost completely over-looked here in Europe. So many people think being able to visit as a tourist or an “entrepeneur” means the border is open. It doesn’t. But I have never heard anyone from, for example, those boats in the Mediterranean mention that.
